ARTIST STATEMENT
My artwork is split into two worlds: the technical & the illustrative. One world where imagery serves as didactic and informational through biomedical visualization & illustration. The second world being a more "fine arts" category where the imagery often represents the externals of a person through gestural & empathetic paintings of the figure. Both stem from a love to learn about people physically, mechanically, socially and emotionally.
My figure drawings and paintings are created to express a relationship of the physical responses and instinctive emotions to our environment and other people. Each piece uses gesture, line and brushwork to relate the subject to the space surrounding it. The expression of the subject in the space is a metaphor for the way in which that person relates to their own existence and sense of individuality. Iconography such as abstract floral patterns, birds, or masks show how the individuals relate to their space in obscure ways. While most of the work is created as oil paintings, a lot of the drawings include ink and other mixed media. Many of my ideas start small in a sketchbook and evolve as they are translated to a larger canvas.
Ever since I can remember drawing came naturally to me. It always seemed to be a means to understand information I was supposed to learn throughout grade school. Interesting enough it seems to still serve this purpose, only now with a broader and more abstract means to understand individuality, relationships, and one’s existence in the space between the two.
